Dr. Ruel is a Professor of Sociology and Director of Graduate Studies at Georgia State University Her research focuses on health disparities, affordable and low income  housing, and how aspects of place and the built environment affect health. She is currently coinvestigator on a study of community land trusts (shared equity housing) as a policy mechanism to increase access to affordable housing; Principal Investigator on a contract with Georgia Department of Transportation on an environmental justice transportation study. She has considerable survey research experience and has recently co-authored a textbook on survey methodology.
