The significant nucleation capacity of PROURB has contributed over the years to making it an important reference center for other graduate programs in the country. Most of its graduates are employed in public higher education institutions and have been contributing to the establishment of new graduate programs.
On one hand, the DINTER programs demonstrate PROURB’s commitment to nucleation and its social role, as these programs are conducted in public universities and serve regions with a shortage of highly qualified academic professionals, such as the North and Center-West regions. This initiative enables research development and the creation of new graduate programs.
A large number of PROURB graduates participate in undergraduate programs as permanent faculty members, mainly in Rio de Janeiro (both the city and the state), but also in Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Paraíba, Rondônia, Tocantins, and even in other countries such as Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, Denmark, and Belgium. Notably, some graduates have held or currently hold prominent academic positions, such as the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Universidade Estácio de Sá and leadership roles in architecture and urbanism programs, including the Directorship of the Architecture and Urbanism Program at the State University of Maranhão, the Coordination of the Architecture and Urbanism Program at PUC-Rio, the Deputy Coordination of the Architecture and Urbanism Program at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, the Head of the Department at the State University of Maranhão, and representation of their faculty in the Brazilian Association for Architecture and Urbanism Education (ABEA). Additionally, some alumni have held leadership positions in the field of architecture and urbanism, such as the National Presidency of the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB). It is worth mentioning that three other PROURB graduates previously served as President of IAB/RJ. Furthermore, one graduate currently holds the position of Vice President of IAB/RJ, while three others serve on its Advisory Board. Additionally, two alumni hold directorial positions at the Architecture and Urbanism Council (CAU/RJ).
Many graduates also occupy prominent positions in municipal and federal agencies or in private professional activities. Some notable positions include the Regional Superintendence of IPHAN, Caixa Econômica Federal (Superintendent), BNDES, and various superintendencies and advisory roles in municipal and state secretariats. Several alumni hold technical positions. In the recent public competition conducted by the City of Rio de Janeiro for the *Morar Carioca* program—an initiative for the reurbanization of favelas—many selected teams included former PROURB students, with some even serving as team coordinators.
Our graduates, both from the master’s and doctoral programs, work as full-time faculty members in architecture and urbanism schools, including UFRJ, UFF, UFES, UFJF, UFV, UFPB, UFSJ, UFBA, PUC-Rio, Instituto Metodista Bennett, UNESA, and Centro Universitário Geraldo Di Biase (UGB/Volta Redonda). Some alumni are also working in foreign institutions, notably at KU Leuven (Belgium), Aalborg University (Denmark), Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (Mexico), Universidad Mayor de San Simón (Bolivia), and Universidad Piloto de Colombia (Colombia). Additionally, some graduates work as temporary faculty members at UFRJ, UFF, UGF, UNIPLI, and other institutions in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Another highlight is the ongoing development of a Master’s program at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of UEMA, where PROURB has trained doctoral graduates through the DINTER UEMA/PROURB program. PROURB has also had doctoral students from UFF, UFES, UFJF, UFV, and UFPB, as well as postdoctoral researchers from UFES, UFC, and UFJF, whose participation in PROURB contributed to the creation of their respective graduate programs, which are now in operation.
PROURB has sought to fulfill its institutional and social role through programs and solidarity networks, within the framework of its institutional policy of integrating teaching, research, outreach, and exchange. It was the first program to propose an interinstitutional doctorate (DINTER) in the field of architecture and urbanism. After the completion of DINTER-UEMA in 2011, PROURB embarked on a new endeavor. In 2010, through the CAPES Novas Fronteiras call, the program secured approval for a DINTER with the Federal University of Mato Grosso and the State University of Mato Grosso (DINTER-UFMT-UNEMAT). This special cohort began its academic activities in March 2011 with 10 students.
Beyond the DINTER programs, PROURB engages in various forms of cooperation with other graduate programs and research centers both nationally and internationally. The program has been establishing cooperative initiatives and solidarity networks with federal, state, and municipal government agencies (such as the Ministry of Cities, Ministry of Culture, IPHAN, and Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation), as well as with civil society organizations, including NGOs and community associations. In this context, through its outreach projects, PROURB provides technical assistance to various segments of civil society, with particular attention to underprivileged groups.
