research groups & labs

Prourb has since its beginning a tradition of group research. All the faculty takes part in the research activities. Nine groups were registered, then consolidated at CNPq and certified by UFRJ. Those groups were established between 1991 and 2004, demonstrating the maturity of the program research. Since the beginning of the program, the research projects gather a significant number of postdoctorate researchers and recent doctors, with the support of FAPERJ, CNPQ and CAPES. We also had associated researchers besides scholars of scientific initiation and technical support. All research projects receive financial support from different development agencies of different types ( teaching and research scholarships and financial support) . A significant number of research regularly receives direct support from CNPq and FAPERJ (notices of research support). It also receives support and resources derived from institutional exchange agreements with other providers of funds. If you wish to get to know each of these PROURB research groups and labs, please visit the links below:

CiHabE – Cidade, Habitação e Educação/City, Housing and Education

The research group CiHabE aims at discussing the (re)production of housing in the city context, through at least three perspectives: from the house itself, from the city and from education. Throughout the process of the group original establishment there were international links with Bauhaus Universität Weimar and with Technische Universität Berlin – TUB, in Germany. The group also has a bond with Associação Chiq da Silva, a NGO focussed on the development of projects concerning the living areas of the unprilileged population. The group impacts may be evaluated by the search for students and researchers who wrote published texts; it may also be evaluated by the supervision and guidance of undergraduation and graduation students as well as by the engagement in: events; in the development of reports and consulting; of committees and examining board; in technical support, besides other activities. It is worth mentioning the HONORABLE MENTION on the first edition of Prêmio Maurício de Abreu [Rio de Janeiro city hall], won by Jacira Saavedra with the dissertation “A forma da INformalidade”.

Laboratório de Habitação, Projeto e Forma Urbana/Lab of Housing, Project and Urban Shape

The Lab of Housing, Project and Urban Shape studies the relationship among various types of housing and urban shapes,as well as, analyses the quality of the housing projects-urban projects with emphasis on unprivileged housing. It recovers the discussion pós-CIAM (post-CIAM) , when the disruption with the modernist movement happened and concepts and scales such as city, neighborhood, borough, street, housing started being discussed. The Lab works on the analysis of housing in three perspectives; the perspective of the location of the city (defined by its closeness to the central urban areas), the perspective of the inclusion in the neighborhood defined by the features offered by this neighborhood to fulfill the housing (quantity and diversity of usage and opportunities), and finally, the perspective of the whole, where we find settings of spatial diversity, limits, spatial permeability, safe areas, the quality of intermediary areas, among others.

Professor Maria Lucia Pecly, part of the group, has defended a thesis in 2011, that coherently analyses the several spatial qualities existing in the housing complexes, recalling facts that range from the first German experiences in the beginning of the 20th century, to the analysis of the housing complexes IAPI in Realengo, Vital Urban Design (DUV). DUV studies the correlation between housing project of social interest, urban vitality and the ownership of public space, developing a spatial analysis methodology. You will also find a research on housing politics and city construction and development, with the evaluation of the program Minha Casa Minha Vida impact, which counts on the participation of doctoral, master and undergraduation scholars, from CNPq and FAU UFRJ. In December, 2012 the book,” Habitação Social e Cidade “ was released, and it was written according to this line of thought and interest. The Lab is part of Rede FAU de habitação , recognized as a university partnership by UN Habitat.

The group has a long experience with slum urbanism projects, having worked on the development of the projects Ladeira dos Funcionários- Parque São Sebastião , Quinta do Caju, Parque Boa Esperança, Divineia (Campo Grande), Cachoeira Grande Cachoerinha (Grajaú – Jacarepaguá ), Morro de São João , Morro São José Operário (praça Seca), Morro do Andaraí , Morro do Catumbi , Morro de São Carlos, Morro do Chapadão (Chico Mendes), Colônia Juliano Moreira. In 2010 it was the winner of the contest Morar Carioca, with honorable mention among the five best proposals.

The professor Maria Lucia won the contest Vilas Cariocas in 1999, because of her concern with the urban design of intermediary areas enabling the possibility of residents intervention in the houses. From 2009 to 2011, professor Maria Lucia Pecly, has developed a research project in partnership with Atelier Universitário da FAU-UFRJ, aiming at the conception of a “Plano de Reabilitação e Ocupação dos Imóveis do Estado Rio de Janeiro”Plan of Estado do Rio de Janeiro city central area properties reconstruction and occupation. The project contained: a survey of the real estate; the criteria for the selection of most urgent properties; and architecture projects oriented to properties occupation.

LADU – Laboratório de Direito e Urbanismo/ Lab of Law and Urbanism

The Lab of Law and Urbanism has as its assumption the study of the landscape decreed under the rights to the city, as a system formed by several human rights. Thereby, researchers with different degrees, originally from law and urbanism fields, study to build a possible and desirable dialog among different knowledge spheres about the urban space/area.

The research group is interdisciplinary and interinstitutional, being its headquarter at PROURB-FAU-UFRJ and it gathers law and urbanism professionals, joining undergraduate scholars, masters, doctors and other researchers. It is linked to Diretório de Grupos de Pesquisas do CNPq.

Besides the development of human resources represented by last year undergraduation monograph, master dissertation and doctoral thesis, the group presents other bibliographical and technical outputs: books, chapters of books, articles, documents in CD-ROM and web, as well as the participation in national and international scientific events. The research development allows relevant national and international contacts and exchanges, expanding the socialization and difusion of legal knowledge. We highlight in the issue-Consumer Law, the Programa Interinstitucional Balanço do Código de Defesa do Consumidor and the proper dialog among the sources: Perspectivas de Consolidação Normativa do Direito do Consumidor (CNPq/SAL/Ministério da Justiça); and in the issue Construction Law, the Projeto Interinstitucional Direito à Cidade e Paisagem Urbana (CNPq/FAPERJ).

LAURD – Laboratório de Análise Urbana e Representação Digital/Lab of Urban Analysis and Digital Representation

The Lab of Urban Analysis and Digital Representation was founded in 1995 by the professors Roberto Segre and José Kós. The research subject of LAURD is Rio de Janeiro city, prioritizing the morphology of the urban structure, the public areas, the streets, avenues, buildings and monuments, not only in its current dimension, but also in the historical process that has formed it and the possibilities of future perspectives. The methodological tools from this interpretation come from the urban history bases, from social and cultural history, which establishes the theoretical starting ground interpreted with the help of the digital representation technique. These will allow the reach of dynamic relationships meanings in the city, since their complex interpretation is only obtained through the interdisciplinarity, and the possibilities raised by computer graphics.

The research goal is to develop a city interpretation that tries to reveal, deepen and clarify the urban structure complexity; elements that define the city, in its distinctiveness, identity and meanings, revealed in 3D vision, flexible, non-linear, of coincidences or generation gaps provided by computer graphics. Its syntheses efficiency, simulation and flexibility, generate the methodological tools, that allow the interpretation of the current design and its justification, used by a theoretical and practical background-joining images and texts, establishing flow of information- which knowledge allows the understanding of future changes.
